The 2026 Refrigerant Revolution | Is Your AC Ready?

Jun 5, 2026

Heard about new AC refrigerants coming in 2026? Wondering if your current unit is suddenly junk?

Here at Lockey Air, we get this question every day. So let’s make it simple: your old AC is not going anywhere. You can keep using it. We can still fix it. The only real change is that new systems we install from now on will use a different, cleaner refrigerant. This guide walks you through what’s changing, why it matters, and how we’re handling it for our customers in Central Texas.

Here’s what you need to know

  • The old refrigerant (R-410A) is being phased down because it’s bad for the environment.
  • New ACs made after 2025 use R-454B or R-32. They’re much cleaner.
  • Your current AC doesn’t need replacing. We can still fix it for years.
  • The new stuff is called A2L, mildly flammable but totally safe when installed right.
  • New systems have leak detectors built in. Extra safety.
  • At Lockey Air, we’re already trained on all this. You’re in good hands.

Why is this even happening?

Look, the old refrigerant R-410A works great for cooling. No question.

But it’s terrible for the planet. Its global warming potential is over 2,000. That means one pound of it traps as much heat as 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide.

The government said: enough. So they passed the AIM Act. It slowly reduces production of high-GWP refrigerants. By 2025, manufacturers had to stop making new residential ACs with R-410A.

That’s the law. We don’t make the rules. But we do help you understand them.

So what’s replacing it?

Multiple outdoor air conditioning condenser units installed outside a residential building, representing modern HVAC systems using low-GWP refrigerants

Two main refrigerants.

R-454B-a blend. Global warming potential of 466. Much better than 2,088. A lot of big brands are using this one.

R-32-a single chemical. GWP of 675. Already used in other countries for years. It’s about 10% more efficient than R-410A. That means lower power bills for you.

Both are in a category called A2L. The “A” means low toxicity. The “2L” means low flammability. Yes, they can burn but barely. It’s like a can of hairspray. In a home, with proper installation, the risk is almost zero.

What does this mean for you right now?

Three scenarios.

Scenario one: You have a working AC that uses R-410A. Great. Keep using it. We can still service it. R-410A will be around for years. No rush.

Scenario two: Your AC is old and breaking down. Then yeah, maybe it’s time to think about a new one. Not because of the refrigerant change, just because it’s old.

Scenario three: You’re buying a new AC today. Then it will use R-454B or R-32. That’s fine. It’s newer, cleaner, and built for the future.

At Lockey Air, we don’t push you to replace a working system. That’s not how we do business.

Are these new refrigerants safe?

We hear this a lot. “Flammable refrigerant? In my house?”

Let’s be real. All refrigerants have risks. R-410A isn’t flammable, but it’s under high pressure. If a line breaks, it can cause frostbite or even explode if it hits a flame.

A2L refrigerants are mildly flammable. That means they need a very specific mix of air and an ignition source to catch fire. In a typical home, that’s incredibly unlikely.

Plus, new ACs with A2L come with leak detection systems. If the system senses a leak, it shuts down. It sounds like an alarm. It’s designed to keep your family safe.

Our techs at Lockey Air have been training on A2L systems for months. We know the safety steps. We install everything right. You don’t need to worry.

Will a new system cost more?

Honestly? A little.

The new systems have more advanced components. The safety features add some cost. So upfront, maybe 5-10% more than an old R-410A system.

But here’s the flip side. The new refrigerants, especially R-32 are more efficient. That means your monthly electric bill could drop. Over a few years, the savings can cover the higher upfront cost.

Also, as R-410A gets phased down, its price will go up. Fixing an old system could get expensive. Switching to a new system now might save you money in the long run.

We can show you the numbers. No pressure. Just the facts.

How we do things at Lockey Air

We’ve been serving Central Texas for decades. Temple, Killeen, Belton that’s our home. Our techs have over 80 years of combined experience.

We’re family‑owned. We’re not some big national chain. When you call us, you get a real person. When we come to your house, we clean up our mess. We explain what’s broken in plain English. We don’t sell you stuff you don’t need.

On the refrigerant change, we’re ready. We’ve done the training. We have the tools. We’re already installing new A2L systems for customers who want them.

If you have questions, just call. We’ll tell you straight.

FAQs

Do I have to replace my current AC because of the new rules?

No. Not at all. If it’s working fine, keep using it. We can still fix it with R-410A for years. The law only affects new systems.

Will R-410A become unavailable?

Not anytime soon. The government is reducing production slowly. Think of it like a car model being discontinued parts are still around for a long time.

Is it safe to have an A2L system in my house?

Yes. Very safe. The new systems have leak detectors and auto shutoffs. The refrigerant is only mildly flammable and less risky than a gas stove. We install everything to code.

How do I know if I should replace my AC now or wait?

Ask us. We’ll come look at your system. If it’s got years left, we’ll say so. If it’s on its last legs, we’ll be honest about that too. No games.

Bottom line

The refrigerant world is changing. But for you the homeowner, not much changes right away.

Keep using your old AC. Call us when it needs a repair. When it’s finally time for a new one, we’ll put in a modern, efficient, safe A2L system.

At Lockey Air, we’ve been through refrigerant changes before. R-12 to R-134a. R-22 to R-410A. This is just the next step. We know what we’re doing.
